The Art of Minimalism in Code

Alif Prasetya Polished reference essay

The Complexity Trap

Every developer starts by wanting to write more code. We measure productivity by lines written. But as we mature, we realize that code is a liability. Every line you write is a line you have to debug, maintain, and upgrade.

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Cognitive Load

Minimalism isn’t about code golf. It’s about reducing cognitive load. When I look at a function, I should understand its purpose immediately.

Strategies for Reduction

  1. YAGNI (You Aren’t Gonna Need It): Don’t build for a hypothetical future. Build for today.
  2. Single Responsibility: Functions should do one thing well.
  3. Delete Dead Code: Be ruthless. If it’s not used, kill it.

Conclusion

Embrace the empty editor. Write only what matters.
